What is SMART?

SMART is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated exclusively to the economic growth and development of technical enterprise and intellectual vitality of the Mid-Atlantic region through the promotion of active partnerships between industry, academia, technical and government institutions.

Why is it Important?

From its inception, SMART has worked to bring the numerous technical capabilities and resources located within DE, MD, NJ and PA into coalescence for the economic benefit of the entire region.

The SMART concept is unique in that it aims to augment the Mid-Atlantic's superior array of technical, research and development, and academic assets through inter-state collaboration, rather than competition. SMART is specifically poised to:

  • Develop and increase cross disciplinary col laboration
  • Enhance technical education and workforce opportunities
  • Promote existing, and seek out new Mid-Atlantic S&T organizations
  • Provide a collaborative model for other regions

The SMART initiative is approaching our final phase of standing up the nation’s first inter-state S&T Authority. While the Governors will oversee the Authority via a Board, the SMART members will execute the daily direction and provide input to the Board. We encourage all to join SMART now as we enter this last phase. Have a say in the direction of this exciting initiative.

 - Bob Carullo, Executive Director.

Why it's Important for You to Join

  • Increase your visibility and professional connections.
  • Gain a voice on legislative and regulatory policies affecting your technical and intellectual resources, within legal and ethical constarints. We do not lobby; we do conduct forums among our tech community to address issues.
  • Attract some of the more then $100 billion in federal R&D funds to our region and attract and facilitate international enterprise.
